We want to be the best. The fastest. The tallest.

Wondering how to be successful?

What we neglect to acknowledge, amidst our all-consuming thoughts of lacking success and approval, is that failure is normal. Failure is inevitable.

The key is to fail successfully and to learn from experience in order to reach our goals.

The most important part to consider, when attempting to learn from failure, is to first acquire the skill to react to it appropriately.

How you choose to deal with mistakes and with doubt determines the direction of your future path. Are you going to let it determine your future?

Are you going to go down that rabbit hole and get stuck in an infinite spiral of self-doubt?

Are you going to go down that rabbit hole and get stuck in an infinite spiral of self-doubt?

Or are you going to stand up, look into the mirror and live on the principles of trial and error?

As we know, even the greatest and most successful people fail. Stephen King was rejected 30 times before he published his first manuscript – which his wife recovered from the trash. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team and then went on to be one of the most successful basketball players of all time. Even Einstein, who is thought to be one of the smartest people to have ever lived, failed numerous times, and was once even thought to be mentally handicapped. Those are all people – who we perceive to be successful – who also struggled and failed and made mistakes.

Here are several suggestions to guide you in how to become successful:

> Focus on your goal – distractions are everywhere and waste your time. Focus on what is most important in order to achieve your goal and get rid of anything that might slow you down.

> Prioritize knowledge, not results– if you solely focus on results your motivation may suffer. If you set the idea of gaining knowledge and experience above all, you will likely be excited about the journey itself.

> Commit– the more you want it and the more you are committed to a plan, the easier it will be to reach your goal.

> Seek structure– What many of us lack, in order to become successful, is structure. A structured plan is always easier to follow, than a mere thought floating around in your head.

> Avoid burnouts– how? Take time to rest, switch things up and learn to know when things are getting too much.

Even if you can’t stick to all the points, it doesn’t mean you’re failing either. The more you internalize these guiding points, the easier and more natural it will be to fulfill them.

Thomas Edison once said,

Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up“.

If you find the determination to succeed, you have to resist the urge to stop when it gets hard. You have to power through and pick yourself up, because you can never know when success will happen.

Success is different to everyone. To some it is success in your profession, to others it is happiness and making the lives of others better.

Take failure as an opportunity to learn and grow. Failure and success are not ultimate ends. They are stepping stones towards your development and help pave your path to achieving your goal.
