The brain has a permanent inability to let go of things. This makes it particularly hard in stressful situations for people to emotionally detach from negative thoughts and to relax. One of the key sources of stress include work-induced worries, problems or hectic peak-seasons.
Humans only have a limited capacity to handle mental, physical and emotional stress. In order to keep our mind in balance, we need to learn to stop carrying work around with us all day and night and redirect our focus. Consciously detaching from work-related stress, will ultimately ensure a much better work-life balance. This will result in more productivity, creativity and a peaceful mind both personally and professionally.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle
The best way to deal with stress is to maximize your body’s ability to handle the stress load. This is best done if you make sure to maintain a healthy lifestyle. At the top of the list, you must ensure a balanced nutrition, enough exercise and high-quality sleep. This trifecta makes up the perfect recipe for being fit – both mentally and physically – in and outside of work!
Take enough breaks
There’s no point in stressing at work to the point of total failure and near collapse. Periods of stress need to be followed by periods of relaxation. That means: if you finished a big project or a main task, take a ten minute break to recuperate. It will help you start your next task feeling refreshed and more creative than before.
Setting boundaries is a process that usually leads to a better quality of life. One of the ways to set boundaries is to let go of work after-hours and to be very consistent as to when you will answer emails or text messages. If it’s part of the job to be flexible, dedicate a specific time frame to it during the day or night.
Time management, being outspoken to colleagues who constantly need your attention, as well as being clear about your goals, are further important steps. Say no to certain requests that do not need to be fulfilled right away. That will allow for a more structured and less stressful way of working.
After a tough day at work, it might be hard to relax and finish your work day, not just physically, but mentally. Emails left unanswered, a big project waiting to be done and any additional stress will become the straw that breaks the camel’s back.
It’s important to find ways to mentally detach from work. Try to put a mental barrier between your job and your personal life. There are plenty of techniques in this regard that might help alleviate this process: meditation, exercise, journaling – basically any activity that distracts you from your work-related thoughts which might induce anxiety.
